Lovers, the two were also friends. Despite all the differences in background and taste, they liked being together.
Grace and Rainier had their problems, of course, but the years brought them closer together and deeper in love. When Maureen King left their service (in 1965), she gave in to the temptation to write a memoir. In it she described watching Grace and Rainier walk “hand in hand in the garden, … A picture of vibrant happiness,” or finding them sitting together on the sofa in the salon, where they “reminded me of young lovers.”
